Bridge – A 4 Rung Circus

V N Ramamoorthy

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Bridge players have to be mavericks, magicians and tricksters, all rolled into one unique and unknown species.

They, in my opinion, are a balanced kind even if holding unbalanced hands!

They have to be trapeze artistes to deftly handle the violent swings and yet land safely on the bar (par?)holding his / her partner's hands. At times you have to make "Safety - net " plays!

They often make "Jump overcalls", yet manage to land on their feet, heads held high 🙂

Some players are dare devils like the motor cycle artist vrooming around in the well of death! Some others dare bid their heads into the mouths of bridge lions and still escape unhurt😢

Yes, Bridge is like circus, sans a tent! To come out successful, you need to be a " Multi" Specialist - a gymnast, a balanced cyclist, a tight rope walker, a sharp shooter et al.

It cannot be a circus without buffoons, right? We do have some in every tournament, playing the fool and it is not funny 🙄

And the CTD / TD is like the Ring - master trying to keep the domesticated men, women and animals to their seats and following the rules in silence 🤫

Like the three rings in a circus, we have 3 rungs of players - the experts, advanced and intermediates!

Of late there is the 4th rung - the beginners, trying to learn the ropes before they join the bridge-o-rama in the centre stage 🙂

The show is on. Come one, come all, be part of the circus!

Happy Bridging,

VNR
