Bridge – Art or Science?

V N Ramamoorthy

Ladies and Gentlemen

Playing and winning at the game of bridge is a scientific art!

As the saying goes, you need two to tango! The steps are important, but you have to be careful NOT to tread over each other's steps, lest you land up with your foot in your mouth 🙃

You need to learn the moves, the formulae, the gadgets and the nuances scientifically to perform this art 🙂.

Playing is easy like natural science, but winning is a collaborative effort to be performed artfully!

You can do experimental bidding, test your skills and even conduct acid tests on opponents. But proof of the pudding lies in the winning. It is a performing art where you and your partner need to do synchronized swimming across a current 😢

It is also akin to kite flying at times, perhaps? But kite flying may not lead you to the winning post on bridge table unless you are strong in your science of bidding, hand play and defence. And you need to have the the right chemistry with your partner.

Practice makes you perfect, for sure. You can make a song and dance about it if only you have a clinical approach. But at the table, an artistic flair makes all the difference between the good and the excellent.

Next time you enter the bridge lab, make sure you know the science with an artistic touch!

Bridge is a performing art which you need to execute scientifically!

Happy bridging,

Cheers
