Resolutions for 2023

V N Ramamoorthy

Every year, year after year, we do get a new year. And there are many who make resolutions for the New Year!

Bridge players are not an exception. The only difference may be,for bridge fraternity, the Old resolutions can stand good for every New year, year after year.

Funny, you may think, but it is true if only you think through 😉

A typical set of New year resolutions an average bridge player can possibly contrive - not very difficult to imagine :

  1. I will be more tolerant with my partner even if he commits blunders.
  2. I will be pleasant faced and courteous, always, to my opponents , team mates, directors and everyone, at all times irrespective of my score and / or my performance.
  3. About 25 occasions I forgot the system last year much to the annoyance of my pd. In the New year I will reduce it by 50 % 🙃
  4. Last year on 12 boards at different locations / tourneys I made cue bids of opponents' suits 24 times to land us in trouble. And in one board I cue bid opp's suit 4 times to land in a contract with 2-1 fit missing a 7-6 fit in another suit. I promise NOT to cue bid in the New Year 🙂
  5. Nearly 75 times I didn't lead partner's bid suit against opponents 3NT . Every time opponents went laughing to the bank after making the impossible contract 😭.  In the New Year I promise to lead partner's suit for sure 👍
  6. This year I miscounted my hand 77 times and said sorry. In the New year I will show 50% improvement, promise!
  7. In the current year about 99 times I didn't return partner's led suit with catastrophic result 😢. My new year resolution is I will return partner's suit, even if I am void in that, God promise 😇
  8. About 113 times I didn't show count to my partner. In the New Year I promise to show count even if I hold a Singleton, you can count me in 😀
  9. About 213 times I didn't notice the fall of a honour card and went down in cold contracts. In the New year I promise to do no honour killing!
  10. If I don't follow all my new year resolutions, I hereby promise NOT to take any New year resolutions, henceforth. Honestly 🥰

Happy New year,
Happy bridging,

Cheers
VNR

P. S. : Above New year resolutions made after gulping down 5 Large pegs on the New Year eve 😇- gulp them down, Hic!
