What to lead? – Solution

L Subramanian

We had posed you, dear viewers a lead problem yesterday. Did you think about what you may like to lead?

If you are able to visualize partner’s likely hand from the bidding or make an educated guess, you can come up with some stunning leads. In short, you have to be imaginative.

So, what did you lead?

Analysis

When someone make a preemptive raise, he/she usually has singleton somewhere. In this hand, you infer it is likely to be in hearts. As you have the first round control in trumps, you should start with a heart lead.

Play

Declarer wins in hand and leads a small trump. This is not the time to play a lazy second hand low. You rise with the ace and play a heart for partner to ruff. Partner plays the K and you encourage with the six. Winning the diamond return with the ace, you give a second heart ruff. Partner cashes Q to defeat the contract by two tricks for a 90% score. The complete hands were:

Quite a few people found the heart lead. How about the rest of you? Do write in and let us know

The Question

Yesterday's deal was from a match point tournament where you find yourself holding the following collection.

After you open 1♣ which LHO doubles, your partner preempts 3♣. Your RHO bids 3♠ which is passed out to become the final contract

What do you lead, and why?

The solution with the rationale will be posted tomorrow

  • I will lead !H because partner is likely to have short in hearts and K of hearts and I hv S A, so I will be able to give a rough to my partner and set the contract taking 2s,1 c, 1d and 1h,

  • I shall lead a small diamond underleading Ace. because my partner could not have 4 cards heart. I expect him club Ace to 5 cards with diamond Q. while club breaks 2-2. I could take 5 tricks.
