All India Shree Cements Open – A curtain raiser

The All India Shree Cement Bridge Championship commences in a couple of days from now at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata.

About 300 players representing more than 50 teams will take part in the 4th All India Shree Cement Bridge Tournaments which will be held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre at New Town, Rajarhat from May 12-15. This prestigious championship is being organized by the Corporate Bridge Association of India under the aegis of Bridge Federation of India and would be held for the team as well as pairs events.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Debasish Ray, secretary WBBA and the prime mover of this event for the past several years shared the following information :

The championship will be the First Category-1 National bridge event after the Covid-19 pandemic shut down all offline games.

Ranking Points would be awarded for meritorious participation in the event which would be taken into account at selection trials for the Indian team.

The Championship offers a total prize money of Rs. 5 Lakhs for the various events.

Debashis also provided the following information about the CBAI

  1. The CBAI has been hosting an annual bridge event where corporates pair up with competitive bridge stalwarts for the past 11 years.

    Stalwarts like Deepak Parikh (Chariman HDFC Ltd), Bharat Desai (Founder and Chairman - Syntel), Rajeev Mehershi (former Finance Secy.), Dr. Pawan Goenka (retd. MD, Mahindra and Mahindra) have all been regular participants in this event.

  2. This event has been the spawning ground for many sponsors of bridge tournaments around the country, thus furthering the cause of bridge in India.
  3. The CBAI has been regularly providing support to needy bridge players, particularly during the last couple of years through the pandemic.
