B C Jain Memorial – A review

Team 5 Diamonds win the Super League

Team 5 Diamonds (Prakash Easwaran, Anirudh Prakash, Debi Prasad Acharya, Shubham Acharya, Soumalya Ghosh) won the B C Jain Memorial Event with a round to spare. Kudos to the team which has 2 juniors, Anirudh and Shubham, one youngster, Soumalya and 2 fathers who were playing with their sons mainly.

Team Burzen (Sourendra Coomer Dutt, Manas Mukherjee, Mrinal Mukherjee, Sowmik Das, Subir Mazumdar, Sadhana Gupta, Rajendra Sirohia and Sukalyan Sarkar). We are pleased to see a new name in this team in the form of Sadhana Gupta. This lady has recently returned to India and has slowly built up her game to the point where she can hold her own against the best in the land. We hope to see a lot more of her!

Swiss League winners Prayas started the day in style, hammering Setu 20-0, but then surprisingly faded away to end up 5th. The hammering cost Setu the second place as they ended up third, just 0.15 VPs behind Team Burzen

The full result can be seen here.

Team Khandelwal had to withdraw after two rounds after one of their participants fell ill and one pair had 'other commitments' This caused an unnecessary disruption to the game as a substitution cannot be allowed at that stage of the league. When teams are allowed the flexibility of 8 players, this withdrawal left a feeling of distaste with all the other super league participants who had to take a walk over.

Squid Game win Continuation League

Squid Game (Choon Chou Loo, Gideon Tan, Ke Jia, Lam Ze Ying, Luo Cheng, Tan Sock Ngin) won the continuation League for the non qualifiers. We are pleased to see this Singapore team, who regularly participate in our events perform so well. The win would have been event sweeter for them after a rather disastrous start to their Swiss League outing (they had to take a bye).

Monica Jajoo (Monica Jajoo, Sumit Mukherjee Kaustubh Bendre, Sayantan Kushari, Somesh Bhattacharya, Samir Basak) finished second, 5 VPs behind with the Bangladeshi team, Maximus, finishing a distant 3rd.

The results of this league can be seen here.

Point of concern

We noticed at least three teams not turn up for the last round of the continuation league (ostensibly since they wanted to watch the IPL). Friends, not completing the event because you do not have a chance of winning a prize has the effect of throwing the whole event out of gear. We request you to show consideration towards your fellow players and the organizers and complete the event as you committed.

Vote of Thanks

We would once again like to thank the sponsor, Mr. Arvind Jain, for instituting this event. He preferred to host it online rather than live so that it would have a far wider reach.

We were chuffed to note that the event garnered a greater response than a live event with greater prize money which was fixed at the same time. That the organizers chose to do it after being aware of this event was something that we noted with disappointment. The confrontation could have easily been avoided with a little communication. Having said that, it is going to be inevitable that online events compete against physical events. We will write more on this in another post as more appropriate.

Although it goes without saying, this has to be said. We would also like to thank all participants for their response. Without you, staging events is meaningless.

Upcoming Events

This Sunday, we will be hosting the second edition of the Dr. R. N. Singhal Memorial IMP pairs event. Keeping in mind that people would like to do other things on a weekend, we have kept this as a single day event. Registration and more details will be available by the end of the day.

Two weeks later, we will be holding the Laxmi Mujumdar Memorial Mixed Pairs. While we have scheduled it for 17-19 June, we may start on Saturday if the participation is low. Request all mixed pairs to confirm participation at the earliest. We have an early bird discount which participants can avail off till Sunday, 12th June.

We request all of you to respond as you have always been doing.
