Interesting Deals from the Last Tournament
This deal is from last weekend's Smt. Laxmi Mujumdar Mem. Mixed Pairs.
4♠, a good contract for East-West, was reached at two tables through feats of immense aggression. With spades breaking 3-2 and the ♦K falling singleton, declarer should be home free, but still needs to be careful. The defence starts with the ♣A-K. Declarer ruffs the second round, draws trump and plays the ♦A felling the ♦K. When he concedes a trick to the ♦J, a third club is played. If declarer had carefully unblocked the ♦10 and ♦8 from dummy, he can simply ruff the club with his last trump and run diamonds. If he missed the unblock, all is not lost! He can recover by discarding his heart loser on the third club. A fourth club allows dummy's blocking diamond to be discarded while it is ruffed in hand. South does no better to switch to a heart as declarer's trump entry will remain intact.
