The EA Womens Championships started off with a big bang. The competition itself was held in E Hotel which is adjacent to the EA mall. As a bridge player, I found it tremendously satisfying to see bill boards for bridge all over the mall! For a minute I felt like a cricket player. The facilities were excellent.

The beauteous Chitrangadha Singh graced the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest. At the inaugural function, Ms Singh stressed the importance of having sponsors to promote bridge and we as a fraternity are lucky to have found one more in Ms Kavita Singhania.
Ms Singh had the entire room fangirling over her. This prompted the compere to comment that she had excited a room full of women, imagine if it were a room full of men! Pat came her reply, "You imagine it!”. Jokes aside, she stressed the importance of promoting the sport amongst women- an initiative that is close to my heart.
The facilities at the event were par excellence. The E Hotel staff went to great extents to make us feel not only welcome, but also cared for. As a case in point, Ms. Vasanti Shah was simply overwhelmed with the way they addressed her mobility issues.
Another point that was discussed was the disparity in standards between women and men. In a conversation with Mr Sumit Mukherjee, he attributed the vast improvement in bridge skills amongst women to their participation in open events. We need to do more to improve women participation in open events.
The event itself went on smoothly without any hitch. One I felt, though, is while all finals took place with screens, we need to ensure that movement is restricted and discussion is limited as tables are quite close
Congratulations to the winners of the women and mixed event.
