Teaching and Learning

V N Ramamoorthy

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, here are a few thoughts penned by me

Bridge is a game which keeps you learning for ever. You are yet to meet a player who can say with finality that he has nothing more to learn.

What is the best way to learn? Read books (they are a-plenty), read columns by experts, watch experts at play (thanks to on-line bridge), join a coaching class or choose a Guru ( mentor).

But there is one more method to learn more. Teach bridge!

Yes, if you teach learners whose skill levels are below you, you can / will learn more 🙂

If you observe any teacher ( in school / college / anywhere) they need to prepare before they teach. In other words, any teacher has to "Learn his lessons well" before he/ she ventures to teach.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Bridge associations have been / are doing a yeomen service - by systematising the Bridge coaching. And of late they have targeted the school children - the right move - "Catch them young " !

And there are some like me who try to "Catch them old "in Senior Citizen resorts!

Kudos to Bridge Federation of India for their recent effort in organising "Train the Trainers" program " which I am sure will help in this endeavour.

Spread the game, catch them young or old, but catch them. We cannot afford to have a sun-set for this wonderful mind sport.

Happy learning and teaching bridge.

Happy bridging ,

VNR
