Swiss Teams
Nobody could have hoped for a more exciting conclusion to an event than the one the finals produced yesterday. In what was a ding dong battle, Texan Aces managed to squeeze out a win with an overtrick on the last board! This while we as organizers were preparing for a tie and how to get it up for kibitzing etc.
The first set saw Maya Meera Sneha pull out a lead of 9 IMPs. In the second set, they squandered it on the last board with an unfortunately hopeless slam contract. While this was recovered by another excellent slam in the 3rd set by Sukamal and Subrata (they bid 2 unanswered slams), there were some small losses elsewhere which was enough to do the trick for Texan Aces.
The detailed results can be seen here. You can see that apart from these two slams, it was a question of which side made more mistakes.
Earlier, in the semi finals, Maya Meera Sneha overcame Team Simple with a tight 10 Imp win, while Texan Aces were simply too strong for Mavericks, outclassing them by a margin of 41.50 Imps. Detailed results are available here.
IMP Pairs
The second session of the Eliminations was conducted in the morning. Kumar Venkataraman and Pradeep Deshpande succeeded in overtaking overnight leaders, Tarun Singhal and Partho Banerjee, pushing them to second place. Saurendranath Chakrabarti and Bidyutt Bhattacharya were 3rd.
The full results can be seen here.
The top 28 (29 actually, since one of the qualifiers withdrew), made it to the finals. The winners Indranath Chatterjee and Chandan Chowdhary, came first by a large margin. Sandip and Marianne Karmarkar turned in another solid performance to emerge runners up. The third place was taken by Ronald Miranda and Abdeali Naffar. Both these players have been performing conistently over the past year. While Abdi (as he is fondly known) has qualified for many team events over the past several months, Ronnie has been a consistent performer in the pairs game.
