When we bridge players talk about the legends of Indian Bridge, I would definitely say that Krishnakumar, fondly known as KK, is one amongst them.
The first time I saw KK was when he was playing the Ahmedabad Nationals in Badri’s team (Well Knit). KK had a typical mannerism of shaking his head a lot with a soft smile and stern look.
We, as beginners, were just happy and delighted to see the stalwart live.
On a personal front, if somebody asked me as to who played the biggest role in the upliftment of my game, I would have no hesitation is saying that it was KK.
KK was originally from Chennai. In the course of his job, he was transferred to Ahmedabad where he started playing weekly bridge with my father. KK was fond of him as both shared some common interests.
One day, my father was not available and KK suggested that I play with him! It was like a dream come true for me. We played and did well in that event. He then offered to play in partnership with me as part of the Texan Aces Team.
I cannot ever forget the breakthrough he gave me and will be indebted to him for life.
I got to play my first NABC (US Nationals) partnering him in the Texan Aces team. It was a great learning experience for me. The first hand that I played in the Knock Outs, I went down in a sitter game contract.
I was really afraid to look him in the eye, but what happened after that was truly astonishing. Instead of scolding me, he got up from his seat and comforted me saying “Relax! Enjoy! At the end of the day it is just a game”. These words definitely helped me develop my confidence as I felt I had nothing to fear about.
A couple of years later, he was diagnosed with cancer. Being the fighter that he was, he tried his level best to lead a healthy life but, unfortunately, the damage had already been done.
We are miss you KK, and hope you are at peace up there. Indian Bridge misses your presence and I, on behalf of all the bridge players, thank you for your contribution to Indian Bridge.
