Tolani Nationals - Mixed Pairs Final - The Dark Horses
In this article, we propose to just write about people whom you would have rarely heard about in the context of any championship of this stature. The idea is to welcome them to this elite group.
We start with the pair of Milind Vartak and Manisha Jameis. This pair just about managed to qualify for the finals, a short nose ahead of far more illustrious performers in the field of this nature. For the writer personally, Milind has been a friend for nearly forty years now. Manisha has probably rarely been heard about outside Pune where she resides and plays. We are really happy that they are here and wish them all the very best.
Next, going up the ladder literally comes the Baroda pair of Darshan Patel and Manjusha Yadav. We doubt that anybody not from Gujarat has heard of the individuals, leave alone the pair per se. They are known to be steady performers and we hope that this pair also does well.
The third pair that we would categorize as such would be that of Pankaj Tanna and Madhuri Gokhale, who finished a very creditable 13th in this fairly tough field. The pair have not been playing much of competitive bridge so far, though they did participate in HCL 2019 in the Bronze category. We hope that this result spurs them into participating more regularly in serious competitive bridge.
Apart from these pairs we are also happy to observe the promising junior girls from Gujarat, Kalpana Gurjar and Vidhya Patel featuring in these finals.
The event will be an all play all, played over 3 sessions of 18 boards each.

Shree Cement Championships
The Shree Cements Championships starts on Friday, July 9 with a Swiss League which will have 8 qualifiers playing in the knock out starting Sunday.
The non qualifiers will start playing in the Match Point Pairs event which will have 3 gruelling rounds of eliminations before the finals to be played on Sunday, July 18.
While these events will be played on RealBridge, the sponsors have also organized a Special Tournament on BBO for players who are uncomfortable with the RealBridge platform for any reason. This will be played on Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18.
Organized by the Bridge Federation of India, this will be a category 1A tournament with ranking points for performing pairs in the main events as per policy.
