Team Monica Jajoo wins Sanjay Damle Tournament
Team Monica Jajoo, comprising of Monica Jajoo, Sumit Mukherjee, Debabrata Majumder, Somesh Bhattacharya, S. Vijayraghavan, MJR Vasudevan, Sabyasachi Sadhukan and Ayan won the event with Team Aristos coming a close second. Aristos, which was just marginally behind the eventual winners, pulled off a maximum 20 VPs in the last round and they would have certainly been fancying their chances to win. Unfortunately for them, Monica Jajoo mirrored their feat ensuring a victory by a margin less than 1 VP.
Team Texan Aces, who finished third, were in fact leaders at the end of the penultimate round. Unfortunately, theirs was the only match in the last round which finished on an even keel.
The final results can be seen here.
We present a hand from the Super League where most of the field was in the contract of 6 Spades by North where some were doubled and others were not.
Andrey Purushottam was the only person to find the correct lead to put the contract down.
At almost every table the bidding started 1S-2NT-. After this, some South's simply bid 6S, others splintered in diamonds before reaching 6S.
At every other table, the lead was the Diamond Ace, a not unreasonable lead when there was no splinter. However, given the splinter, Andrey reasoned correctly that he has a better chance of seeing dummy and deciding if he leads the Club Ace instead of the Diamond Ace.
This reasoning was well rewarded when his partner showed out on the lead allowing them to bring down this otherwise cold contract. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for their team, their team mates allowed East-West to sacrifice in 6D -X for -1 taking a sure plus score rather than chance slam.

When you are to lead from a suit headed by A and AK against slam and partner’s double. It is 💯 correct to open club Ace as opponent cannot bid little slam with two losers in diamond
