UNN Rao Memorial Bridge Tournament

This tournament is held in the memory of Shri U. N. NARAYANA RAO who passed away at the age of 95 in 2021.

Starting from a humble early life in villages around Mangalore (Karnataka), U. N. N. Rao went on to study Chemistry at Banaras Hindu University and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and retired as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Karnataka and Goa.

He took up bridge during his first posting as an Income Tax Officer in Kolhapur, and continued playing, with his wife Gouri as partner, in Belgaum, Bangalore, Madras, Chittoor, Calcutta and Bombay.

After retirement, he played every day in Bangalore all the while mentoring and teaching bridge to bridge enthusiasts. He won many tournaments, both team and pairs, with the last one being the Bangalore City League Tournament at the age of 90.

He even authored an unpublished book dealing with a variant of the Precision System titled, “System Notes” for the benefit of his bridge partners.

We dedicate this tournament to his memory and thank his family for the generous support they have extended to the bridge community.

Karnataka State Bridge Association (KSBA) under the aegies of the Bridge Federation India has great pleasure in presenting the bridge playing public with a pairs tournament in a novel format. 

The UNN Rao Memorial Tournament will be played in the following format.

Qualification League: 4 separate Sessions from 8 - 11th Nov at 6:30 p.m. on Realbridge

From 8th November to 11th November, total 4 Qualification sessions will be conducted. (20 boards per session)

1. 1. Scoring for each session will be Cross IMPs converted to IMPs (Rounded to next Integer) and further to VPs with 20 Board Scale
   2. Participants have to play a minimum of 3 sessions out of 4 to qualify for the final league (Gold/Silver)
   3. The best 3 scores out of 4 Qualification sessions will be used for computing the qualifying ranks.

Final League: Gold and Silver Sections

1. The finals will be conducted from 15th to 17th November
   1. The top 32 eligible Pairs(those who have played at least 3 sessions in Qual. stage) will qualify for the Gold Final.
   2. The remaining eligible players ((those who have played at least 3 sessions in Qual. stage) will be playing a Silver Final
   3. The finals will be played over 3 sessions of 20 boards each on each day
      The Gold finals will be a Howell movement restricted to 30 rounds
      The movement for the Silver finals will be decided later based on the qualification list.
   4. A carry over of 10% of their VP score will be awarded to each pair in the finals
2. Daily Prizes for the top 4 scorers in the Qualification stages, Gold Finals and the Silver Finals will be awarded.
3. A pair playing for less than 3 days at the qualifying stage will only be eligible for Session prize of the qualifying stage day, in which he has participated.
4. Overall prizes will be awarded at the end of the Gold and Silver Finals
5. Special Prizes will be announced for each day

Entry Fees

• One time fee for all sessions (Qual + Finals): Rs. 1,400 {Approx USD 19}(To be paid no later than 1430 hours on 8th November)
• For each day of the Qualification stages Rs. 300 {Approx USD 4} (To be paid no later than 1430 hrs on the day of the event)
• For pairs who have paid Single sessions and qualified for finals:  Rs. 900 {Approx USD 12} To be paid no later than 1430 hrs on 15th November
