UP State Bridge Championships – A Report

Shantanu Rastogi

Team Jai Jawan Jai Kisan are UP State Bridge Champions!

The 50th UP State Bridge Championship was held at MB Club, Lucknow from June 17 - 19, 2022. The Championships had a teams event along with an IMP pairs event. Participation was open to players from UP and neighboring states

Swiss Teams

A total of 20 teams participated in the league for the Lala Sriram Agarwal trophy. After 7 rounds of Swiss league, the top 6 teams played Super league with the remaining teams playing in the Silver Group.

In what can only be described as an absolutely brilliant result for the game, team Jai Jawan Jai Kisan ( Monu Kumar, Vipin Kumar, Monu Kumar Anchar, Sanjeev Kumar, Pradeep Tomar) from Johri village, Baghpat district, lifted the trophy. This team had no sponsors.

As one player reported "Very simple and down-to-earth players. All of them, especially Monu Kumar, keep the bidding simple and excel in the card-sense and handplay! Most importantly, none of them shows even a trace of arrogance despite their wonderful achievements! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘. They are grateful to Rinku ji for supporting them, and have high regards for her! πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’"

Team Pals (TP Khare, Jitendra Pande, Anil Bansal, Umesh Singh, Vikas Mohan Gupta, HS Dua) were runners up with teamΒ  Ajay Agarwal (Ajay Agarwal, Om Hari Agarwal, Mukul Goel, RA Siddiqui, Pullak Garga, CP Agarwal) secured the third place. They were also winners of Madhava Prasad trophy for winning Swiss League.

Team Constellation (TC Pant, Asha Sharma, Dr Nikita Kamal, Amarjit) won the Sahu Ravi Prakash trophy for the best non UP team.

In the Silver Group, Team Rohit ( Rohit Mishra, SM Moin, Ajay Kumar Singh, DN Sinha, Jaieshwar kumar) won VC Agarwal trophy with NCR Green coming second and a second Jai Jawan Jai Kisan team coming third.

It is indeed heartening to see such performance from the Johri village and we hope to see many more such stories (like Rabeedpura) repeated round the nation.
