V S Gangal Memorial, 2021 – Wrap Up

Sukrit Vijayakar

This post is primarily a thank you to all you players who gave the event such a phenomenal response especially as it was coming on the back of the biggest online event in Bridge.

We had 61 teams participating in the teams event. Our host, Mr. Puneet Gangal, agreed to increase the number of qualifiers and number of prizes for the event to 16. The sharp end of the event was truly sharp with very narrow margins separating the contests with a board or two to spare. The finals exemplified the contest in general where team Savage and Average led by Mrs. Hema Deora eked out a nail biting finish over Texan Aces

The Match Point Pairs event saw 94 participants, a tad below our expectations, we must admit. They contested 2 tough rounds of eliminations after which 27 pairs joined a sponsored pair in an 'all-play-all' final. This event too saw the leadership change hands many times before Swapan Some and Shankar Narayan Ghosh pipped the field to emerge deserving winner. Tanmoy Dhar and Bhaskar Sarkar claimed second place.

The IMP Pairs event saw 100 participants, who played 2 sessions of 20 boards each. At the end of this, Kista and Ravi Goenka finished on top of the heap, followed by Partha Banerjee and Biswadip Roy. We would like to make a special mention of G V N Siva Kumar and K S R V Chalam, who finished a creditable 3rd place in quite a strong field.

The Mixed Pairs was played in the exiting Swiss Pairs - Cross IMPs to VP format. We had 46 pairs playing including 3 international participants. Veterans Mini Naidoo and Priya Ranjan Sinha claimed top spot from Kista and Bharti Dey. Here too, we would like to specially mention Ambrish Wadera and Sheena Singh who claimed the third place from several other formidable partnerships.

Prizes will be distributed by us shortly, ideally before the 15th.

Once again, we thank all of you for making the event a huge success.

As a post script, we realize it would have been brilliant had we been able to publish a bulletin every day. Alas, we lack the bandwidth to do so. We welcome volunteers to write regularly for the site.
