World Bridge Championships – Day 2

Day 2 of the championships saw all the Indian teams meet some of the toughest opponents in the league. The ladies team, unfortunately, withered under the onslaught. The other teams, however, did do well in parts.

Our brightest hope remains the senior team which is in 5th position. The Open and Mixed teams are in the mid-field. The ladies will have to do a lot of work to lift themselves from the bottom of the pack.

We wish all the teams the very best of luck for day 3.

The open team started the day well, pulling off convincing victories against Switzerland (19.69-0.31) and Uruguay (16.09-3.41). However, the USA2 team proved too strong for our team. They whitewashed us 20-0 to leave us standing 14th at the end of the day.
There seems to have been a 0.5 VP penalty levied on one of the teams in the match with Uruguay. We will attempt to fetch the details.

The Ladies team had a disastrous day collecting 0, 2.83 and 4.08 VPs against Denmark, Italy and Morocco respectively. They lie at the 23rd spot with a huge gap to the 22nd ranked team.

Like the open team, the seniors too started off well, with facile victories over Sweden (12.55 - 7.45) and USA 2 (17.31-2.69). However, they came a cropper against the USA 1 team losing by 40 IMPs to collect only 1.91 VPs. They are still performing strongly and are currently placed 5th.

The Indian Mixed team started the day with a bang, beating Guatemala 19.45 - 0.45. However, the next two rounds were disappointments, losing narrowly to Croatia 8.80-11.20 and then the Netherlands, 6.25-13.75.

The Indians are currently ranked 16th.
