16th World Bridge Games – Day 5

Sukrit Vijayakar

Good day friends.

We are terribly saddened to share with you the news that Ms. Alka Jain, one of our players in the Indian Ladies team lost her husband on the 25th of October. She had received the information that he was unwell in her morning. Nevertheless she courageously opted to play the session. At the end of the session, she was informed of his passing away. She has since commenced her journey back home. I am sure that all of you join me in offering condolences and praying for strength for her to bear the loss and move on.

Qualification status

As the round robin enters the final day, it is evident that the Indian Seniors and Mixed Teams will qualify for the knock out stage.

Sadly, it is equally evident that the Open and Ladies teams will not qualify.ca While it is still technically feasible, the ods of this happening are low. I will be happy to be proved wrong.

I am sure both the teams gave it their best.

Mobile Phone Holder

There was a lot of buzz going on in WhatsApp groups about the penalties being applied for mobile usage being harsh and how there should be a proper place for depositing phones etc.

On the left is a close up of one end of the playing tables. You can see that each screen had a pouch for placing materials. The WBF had required that players switch off their phones and keep it visible in this pouch. This was specifically mentioned somewhere in a document in the run up to the event (Unfortunately, I cannot trace the document right now).

This is just for information.

As has now become regular, we have some lovely photos by Simon Stocken from the venue.

As mentioned yesterday, we would welcome reports of hands, or detailed matches from anybody. Will try and post them in the day's coverage. Photographs from the venue would be really welcome.

India had a bye in Round 13. In Round 14, they were roundly beaten by China 1.67 - 18.33. They won their final round against Hungary by 5 imps (11.48 - 8.52).

At the end of the day, India was in 12th place (with 8 to qualify). With two matches to go, we are around 14 VPs adrift of the 8th place team. Let us hope for a miracle in their matches against Denmark and France!

The Indian ladies were playing as a four member team today as a result of the devastating loss to Ms. Alka Jain. Words cannot describe this author's sense of shock and grief.

Let me start by sharing some photographs of the team in their match against Mexico

Nevertheless, life must go on and India started their day with a scintillating 31 imp (17.56 - 2.44) victory over France. Unfortunately, they lost their next 3 matches by narrow margins against Mexico ( 5 imps / 8.30 - 11.70),  Norway (9 imps / 7.10 - 12.90) and the Netherlands (7 imps / 7.69 - 12.31).

At the end of the day, they are lying in 17th position, 11 VPs adrift of the 16th place. Like the open team, they too will need a miracle to qualify.

Today, they will be playing Australia, China and Poland. India's scorecard, as well as their upcoming matches can be seen by clicking here.

The India Seniors started the day with a walkover with Switzerland. Here are some photographs of their match versus Denmark

They lost their match against Denmark by 8 imps (7.39 - 12.61). They then won their next two matches against Colombia (13 imps / 13.97 - 6.03) and Poland (27 imps / 16.91 - 3.09) to retain their 5th place.

Today, they will be playing  Hong Kong China, Japan and Scotland. India's scorecard, as well as their upcoming matches can be seen by clicking here.

The mixed team had another good day winning 3 of their 5 matches and a walk over in one round. But first, some photographs of their match with Chile

The day actually started badly with a 38 imp (1.03 - 17.97) win thrashing by  Colombia. Colombia seem to have been penalized by 1 VP. However, they recovered smartly to win the second match against Chile by an identical margin (18.97 - 1.03). They had a walk over against Morocco in the third round followed by a narrow 7 imp (7.49 - 21.51) loss against China. In their final round, they simply overwhelmed Hong Kong China by 55 imps to collect a maximum.

At the end of the day, India was in 6th place.

Today, they play Poland, USA, Croatia and Italy.
