Nandu Oke Memorial Tournament

Subhash Gupta and Arun Bapat won the Nandu Oke Gold Finals event, comfortably ahead of the second placed trio of Keyzad Anklesaria, Rajeshwar Tewari and Jaggy Shivdasani. A relatively less known pair of Rajesh Jain and Sisir Banjerjee took third place. Barely qualifying to the Gold event, with a carry over of just 0.78 VPs, they challenged the belief that carry overs are insurmountable in the finals of any event!

Kiran Nadar and B. Satyanarayana won the Silver edition of the event. In second place were the upcoming pair of S Krishnamoorthi and Sarika Mittal, a pair we have mentioned as being one to watch out for before. In third place was an upcoming youngster, Mithun Mukherjee, partnered by the veteran, Pinaki Khan.

Our heartiest congratulations to the winners.

Over 120 pairs participated in this event, a fitting tribute to the memory of Nandu Oke, who was a very popular bridge player in Mumbai. In fact, the author of this article may not have been playing bridge today were it not for him!

Upcoming Events

The Bridge Calendar for the next few weeks is packed with a lot of exciting events with many more in the pipeline. As of now, the following events are coming up on RealBridge

  • National Pairs Championship (29-Apr to 2-May) 

    Organized by the BFI and conducted by KSBA, The TTK-Prestige National Pairs Championship is a ranking event in the national calendar.

  • J M Shah Memorial Tournament (5-May to 10 May)

    This tournament, dedicated to the memory of J M Shah, who passed away approximately a year ago, promises to have extremely attractive prizes.

  • B C Jain Memorial Tournament (11-May to 14-May) 

    This tournament is dedicated to the memory of B C Jain, a very senior BFI director and functionary. This event too, promises to have attractive cash prizes.

  • TVS Mobility Pairs Tournament (29-31 May*) 

    This tournament, tentatively scheduled on the above dates will be a pairs event, once again with attractive cash prizes.

On the opening lead of DA by North, South playing the DJ, and shift to H3, you insert Q losing to K in South hand and back comes HJ with North playing H2. How do you play this hand?

Ms Rina Khaitan, KSBA scholar partnering her mentor B.N.Jamkhandi was the only declarer who found the play to this contract out of 10 tables in Monday's game

North made a sub optimal double in a live auction and Rina took full advantage to find the winning play in a flash. Can you spot the percentage line based on the bidding?

Rina correctly judged that SK must be with North after South has already come up with HK, HJ and DJ.

She clearly needs CK with North to have any chance. Now how does one play the spade suit?

If spades are 2-2, it is easy. If spades are 3-1 one option is to play North for SK. The other option is to play North for KJ 6 or KT6 and stiff J/T with South hand.

Rina correctly judged that the latter case is more likely, especially after South bid 4D on flimsy values (must have shape).

Rina ruffed a 3rd round of hearts and played SQ from hand pinning the ten in Souths hand, lost a spade trick to J and eventually took the club finesse to make.

R V not only acknowledged her good play, but also took the trouble to write it up and report it for our reading pleasure.

To put it in perspective, he also added "This play was missed by many experienced players who played the event. Of course, quite a few Norths unsportingly passed making it very difficult (impossible) to find the winning play."

This takes nothing away from Rina's play of the hand. She made full use of the information available to her and secured a near top on the board.

Bridge From Home Club

This week's BFH Weekly Pairs tournaments saw many new faces, originating mainly from Bangalore as preparation for the KSBA Medley Event taking place this weekend.

On Monday, 3 pairs from KSBA featured in the top five participants. We have featured a hand played by Ms. Rina Khaitan in today's bulletin.

On Wednesday, Hermione Mathias, playing with her mentor Girish Bijoor, celebrated her birthday in style by winning the Wednesday Wonders event in a strong field of 45 contestants.

We congratulate her on her sterling achievement and use it to point out that you, dear reader, could also win events like this. What are you waiting for?
