Women and Bridge

Sukrit Vijayakar

This post is being made due to three reasons all of which are equally important.

First of all, we have a host of excellent women players in the country. One of them, Hema Deora, just one a reasonably big tournament yesterday fighting off a determined challenge from over 60 teams. Another, of course, is Kiran Nadar who, apart from her exploits at the bridge table, is indubitably the biggest patron of bridge in our country. We also have Marianne Karmarkar, Vasanti Shah, Asha Sharma, Mini Naidoo among the veterans, Kalpana and Vidya among the juniors and many others who may please forgive me for not mentioning them.

Secondly, Mr. Puneet Gangal, has very graciously hosted a mixed pairs tournament in memory of his mother this Sunday. We would like to remind the women, without whom this tournament would be impossible to make successful, to participate in large numbers.
This is where you click to register for the event.

Last but not least, we have a beautiful poem written by another regular contributor, Sarika Mittal, who is also an upcoming player with the potential to rise to the top echelons of ladies and mixed pairs in the country.

Often I wondered haplessly,
Men are better bridge players,it must be a fallacy?

The qualities that makes a good bridge player, we femme fatales possess
Our results are sometimes an outstanding success
Through bridge we certainly express!

An aptitude we have plenty for the game
Don’t dismiss us as simple dames
Constantly striving to achieve higher aims,

No one can deny us our moments of fame
Many awards we have been able to claim!
The world is ours to tame…

To give the above a humorous twist,
No one can doubt our ability to persist,
In strategy planning against our husbands/partners we are specialists
Sometime we are akin to a harmless terrorist
A notch higher, such qualities come to our game assist!

Our memory never deserts us
Husbands of ours can vouch for this albeit with a fuss
Don’t you find my analogy hilarious!
