Take a Call on your Bid!

V N Ramamoorthy

Ladies and Gentlemen

Learning never ends, is a wise old tenet. How true!

It is no different in the game of bridge. When you think you know everything you need to know, something new pops up to confront you 😢

Just recently - yesterday to be precise - I learnt something. "A Bid" is different from " A Call" - so says the the law!

Meaning you make a bid to convey how many tricks you intend to make (with a base of 6). Whereas when you Pass, Double or Redouble, you are making a call, not a bid 🙂!

A bit perplexed? Even I was when I heard this. I even challenged that both mean same thing. When the Applicable Law (Law 18) of " Laws of Duplicate Bridge " approved by WBF was quoted to me, well I had to eat my words 😭

But I still maintain, confidently, you can make a bid over a call. And you can take a call over a bid too 😂

Confused? Well my purpose is served!

In any case, when to bid or what to bid is your call 😇

When playing bridge you need to employ all your five senses - Sight, Hearing, Smell, Touch / Feel and Taste.

In addition, as a human you are blessed with the 6th and 7th senses too; which come in handy on the Bridge Table!

I will elaborate on the senses, some other time as the air is already heavy, I am afraid!

But the Robots are not humans and are devoid of any senses ( hopefully) ... So is it advisable to play with a robot than a human partner? Does that make sense?

While we toy with these thoughts, let us get on with the game.

Happy bridging,

Cheers
