Nilamoni Das Memorial

More than a century ago, Shri Nilamoni Das (01/09/1922 - 28/10/2007) was born in a remote village in Odisha. He migrated to Calcutta at a very young age. He started his career with LIC. Through perseverance and self-discipline, he developed himself phenomenally and adapted to the rich cultural ethos of the City of Joy.

He was a passionate follower of both cricket and football. A member of Mohun Bagan, the Cricket Association of Bengal, and the National Cricket Club, he would hardly miss a football match or a cricket Test match. He was also a great connoisseur of classical music and parallel cinema.

A defeat in the quarter-finals of an Auction Bridge tournament turned him away from the game, and he switched over to Contract Bridge. In a very short span of time, he became a well-known face in the Contract Bridge circuit and participated in two Winter Nationals at Kolkata and Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. He also achieved a few successes. Unfortunately, he left the game abruptly when his partner and best friend stopped playing Bridge.

Even then, there would not be a single day when he did not read a Bridge book. Until shortly before passing away, he was reading *End Play* by Coffin.

This tournament is being hosted in his memory by all the members of his family and our most lovable Shri Sourendra Coomer Dutt, who was inspired by Shri Das to play Contract Bridge rather than Auction Bridge.
